Streetwear is a casual and unique style that started in the 1980s. California surfer Shawn Stussy came up with this style after designing and selling surfboards and shirts with his own personal logo. Since then, hip-hop artists, pop stars, actors, and models have come up with their own streetwear brands. Continue reading this article to learn about the history of streetwear and its impact on fashion.
The 1980s and 1990s: Stussy’s Start
Stussy started street fashion by making t-shirts with his design specifically for his friends. He then started to make more apparel with his logo and sold products out of his car. His small self-run business only attracted skaters and surfers for a while. However, his brand became more popular in the mid-1980s when his friend Frank Sinatra, Jr. helped him form the company Stussy, Inc. After the company started, Stussy and Sinatra traveled around the world and met many celebrities. Stussy, Inc. became very popular throughout Europe.
In the early 1990s, Stussy, Inc. came out with apparel that attracted hip-hop artists and clubbers. Stussy worked with many designers and even opened a line called Stussy Sista. Although Stussy no longer manufactures his own clothes today, his company and clothing can still be found online. Stussy inspired a unique type of fashion that encouraged celebrities to start creating their own styles of clothing.
The Rise of Streetwear Brands That Are Still Popular Today
Stussy’s streetwear paved the way for brands that are still popular today. Some of these brands include Adidas and Nike.
Adidas started as a shoe brand in Germany in 1936. However, many artists and entrepreneurs tried to upgrade it so that it would become a popular street brand. Its popularity skyrocketed in 1997 after French investor Robert Lewis-Dreyfous bought it and put it under the company Salomon Group. The brand kept its original logo—three stripes forming the shape of a triangle with the brand name under it. Adidas is known for its vintage sweatshirts, vintage jackets, and sweatpants. This brand is currently worn by athletes and singers such as David Beckham, Katy Perry, and B.O.B.
In the mid-1960s, Nike shoes were originally created by college track-and-field coach Bill Bowerman in Germany. However, Nike did not get its name or logo until the 1970s. The brand really took off in the 1980s after the “Just Do It” advertisement campaign inspired celebrities. Since then, celebrities such as Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, and Tiger Woods have worn Nike shoes. The Nike logo has been printed on many shirts and pants as well. The Nike brand is known for its dri-fit t-shirts and crop tops, dri-fit socks, and the Nike Air Max line.
